How to Save Smartphones from Water Damage

Cell phones and water: Not a good mix. Yet as phones becaome more and more a part of our everyday lives, it seems like we keep coming up with new and creative ways to damage them. A dip in the pool, perhaps? Or an unexpected trip into some salty water at the beach? I actually have a friend who unknowingly floated around the Dead Sea with a phone in her pocket. Then, of course, there’s that other famous body of water phones just can’t seem to stay away from — the toilet bowl.
No matter where you drop it, it’s never a happy moment when your phone first learns to swim. But try not to panic. Just because your phone got wet doesn’t mean it’s gone for good. Follow these steps and you have a pretty decent shot at bringing it back to life.

Don’t press any buttons.
I know it seems tempting, but pressing a button on your phone can let any residual moisture seep through, increasing your risk of damage.

Remove the internal components.
If your phone has a removable pack banel, take it off. Grab the battery, your SIM card, and/or your microSD card and dry them off completely. After all, even if you can’t save your phone, hopefully you’ll be able to save some of the valuable information you had stored inside. Place the components on a dry paper towel and put them off to the side.

Stick it in some rice.
Now that you’ve gotten rid of all the water on the surface, it’s time to suck out the rest of the moisture you can’t see. Your best bet for doing this is a product like the Bheestie Bag, which is filled with tiny balls (pictured below) that are designed to absorb and retain water more efficiently than even silica. But you probably don’t have a Bheestie Bag just lying around (though if you do, kudos). In that case, reach for the nearest bag of rice. Pour the rice into a container, and bury the phone and components somewhere in the middle. Move the phone around every couple of hours, just to make sure gravity is doing its thing.

5 essential BlackBerry tips and tricks

Get more from your BlackBerry with these handy tips
You probably bought a BlackBerry for the keyboard and fantastic battery life but there's more to it than that.
You can just pick a BlackBerry up and start using it, because all you need to do is press the Menu key to get the main options on every screen - but the BlackBerry OS hides a huge number of clever tricks and shortcuts that make it faster and simpler to get things done.
There are some tips you won't need often - like pressing Alt, Del and the right-hand Caps key at the same time to reboot instead of just restarting; others you'll use all the time, like pressing the red 'hang up' key to get back to the home screen and clicking the spanner icon on the home screen to open Options. Here are our top 25 Blackberry tips.
1. Use the keyboard less
BlackBerry has always had a QWERTY keyboard and you can type everything out in full - but you can save time with the built-in shortcuts. Press space twice at the end of a sentence to get the full stop and an automatic capital on the next word.
Don't bother with apostrophes in words like I'm and isn't (type im and the BlackBerry will correct it for you); there are other handy abbreviations like 'wel' to get 'we'll' and 'il' to get 'I'll' and you can add your own with Options > AutoText.

BlackBerry autotext
AUTOTEXT: Speed up typing by creating your own abbreviations and corrections
2. Quick capitals
You don't need Shift - press and hold a letter key to type the upper case letter.
3. Skip Symbol
If you're typing an email address into a field that expects an email address, don't bother looking for how to type the @; just hit space and BlackBerry with put the @ in for you. Press space when you need the . in the middle of the email address and it will fill that in, too. Do the same for URLs in the browser; pressing space fills in the periods faster than typing them by hand.
4. Fast select
There's a Select command on the menu for choosing what to copy and paste - but you can make a selection just by holding down the Shift key as you scroll the trackball.
5. Keyboard shortcuts
Save on scrolling by using 't' to get to the top of any email message, web page or other long screen and 'b' to get to the bottom. There are specific shortcuts for all the built-in apps like using the Mute button to pause videos or music or skipping to the next or previous track by pressing and holding the volume up and down keys (which also zoom in and out in the camera - although many apps use I and O to zoom); there's a list in the Help tool.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Tips & Tricks

The Android KitKat 4.4.2 update is probably the best mobile OS from Google at the moment. However, there is a certain issue that the Samsung Galaxy S4 has been experiencing after being updated to the KitKat OS.

For starters, you can install Better Battery Stats from the common App Store. Upon installing the app, let it run for 24 hours without interruption. Check out the results and identify, which is the guilty party that has been draining the battery.

Then there is the System Tuner which you can rely on. Right after you’ve identified the power sucker, use System Tuner to isolate it and kill its processes. The downside is that this app requires you to root your device. If not, you have to seek other apps that might just do something similar. Do take note that System Tuner does not affect the Android OS or the smartphone’s hardwares in any way.

All in all, this is something that Google should look into and roll out the much-needed fixing. Who knows? The tech-giant might just be creating the Android 4.4.3 at the moment.
